  • Yes and no. Here's the breakdown:

You can bring fabric from home or purchased at a local store, as long as it fits the criteria listed for the class.

You cannot bring items you'd like to upcycle, such as old sheets or curtains. I love and encourage an eco-friendly, resourceful mindset — but unless the class specifically - this one's a no.

You cannot use materials that aren't listed in the class description, or that are specifically noted as materials to avoid.

The materials listed for each project are carefully chosen, and we ask all students to stick to them.

Here's why: the teaching process and projects are designed down to the last detail to give every student ( whether you're sewing for the first time, coming back for a refresher, or advancing your skills ) the smoothest learning experience possible. Also the facts are fabrics behave very differently depending on a lot of factors, and using something outside the guidelines adds an extra layer of complexity on top of everything we're covering in class. Not the mention impacting the drape, fit, function and construction on the piece. It can create challenges for the individual student and disrupt the flow for the group as a whole. Keeping everyone on the same materials means everyone stays supported and on the same page.

I get it, you didn't know it was that deep🙃 haha! I love that your thinking of your project with a since of curiosity and If you're ready to experiment with other fabrics, a private lesson is the best way to get the most personalized support for your specific interests.

  • Yes! Depending on the project I will have materials available in the studio for you to purchase with a 10% off student discount.

In fact here is the policy for materials:

    MATERIALS
It is up to the instructor's discretion if the materials brought by the student are appropriate for the project. If a student brings the incorrect materials or forgets them, they can purchase provided materials at the time of class.

  • Here is the policy for that:
    LATE
It is strongly advised to arrive early. We will need to start promptly and use every minute of our time together to ensure smooth instruction and completion of the project. The group will move through all instructions and steps at the same time. This is not a drop-in style class.

If a student arrives more than 5 minutes late, it is at the discretion of the instructor whether they can join. If a student arrives 10 minutes late, they forfeit their registration fee and space in the class.

If you suspect you will be late, contact info@homeecnyc.com so we know you're on the way and don't assume you are a no-show.

  • Hey no prob! Fill out the { Waitlist Form} to let me know. I take these requests as top priority and I‘m interested in teaching things people are actually interested in learning!

  • AHHHHHHH! yes!!! I would love to hear it . drop it in the [Suggestion Box}

  • Short Answer:
    Private lessons - Yes
    Workshops - No

Using the studio machines ensures everyone is working with the same equipment, allows me to teach troubleshooting consistently, and helps the class stay on the same pace. It also avoids setup, compatibility, and maintenance issues that can take time away from instruction.

  • What a sweet baby angel you are! As a self-funded teaching artist, community support is paramount to my success—period. Big companies and celebrity brands have the budget and the algorithm on their side. What they don’t have, that we do, is real-life connection and people power!

Here are a few things that would greatly impact my life and the work I'm building:

    • Subscribe to my newsletter (above)

    • Be my friend – tell me you see me and that I’m doing a good job (haha!)

    • Share virtually – post on social media or add a blurb to your own newsletter

    • Recommend my services to friends, or announce the news to your book club

    • Request a Private Lesson

    • Follow and engage with me on social media

    • Come visit me!

    • And one very honest and humble option:
If you feel called to share funds, it would be deeply appreciated. Even just $5 (a few spools of thread!) goes a long way. Venmo

  • Home Ec NYC will be the home studio of Hilandel! I’m so excited that the studio will allow me to bring all of my work together under one roof. The Hilandel brand will go through its own metamorphosis in 2026—so be on the lookout! 😊 Book a consult!
