Here is the policy for that:
LATE
It is strongly advised to arrive early. We will need to start promptly and use every minute of our time together to ensure smooth instruction and completion of the project. The group will move through all instructions and steps at the same time. This is not a drop-in style class. If a student arrives more than 5 minutes late, it is at the discretion of the instructor whether they can join. If a student arrives 10 minutes late, they forfeit their registration fee and space in the class.
If you suspect you will be late, contact info@homeecnyc.com so we know you're on the way and don't assume you are a no-show.

Yes and no. Here's the breakdown:
✅ You can bring fabric from home or purchased at a local store, as long as it fits the criteria listed for the class.
❌ You cannot bring items you'd like to upcycle, such as old sheets or curtains. I love and encourage an eco-friendly, resourceful mindset but unless the class specifically mentions it - this one's a no.
❌ You cannot use materials that aren't listed in the class description, or that are specifically noted as materials to avoid.
The materials listed for each project are carefully chosen, and I ask all students to stick to them.
Here's why: the teaching process and projects are designed down to the last detail to give every student ( whether you're sewing for the first time, coming back for a refresher, or advancing your skills ) the smoothest learning experience possible. Also the facts are fabrics behave very differently depending on a lot of factors, and using something outside the guidelines adds an extra layer of complexity on top of everything we're covering in class. Not the mention impacting the drape, fit, function and construction of the piece. It can create challenges for the individual student and disrupt the flow for the group as a whole. Using the same materials means everyone stays supported and on the same page.I get it, you didn't know it was that deep🙃 haha! I love that your thinking of your project with a since of curiosity and If you're ready to experiment with other fabrics, a private lesson is the best way to get the most personalized support for your specific interests.

Yes! Depending on the project I will have materials available in the studio for you to purchase.
In fact here is the policy for materials:MATERIALS
It is up to the instructor's discretion if the materials brought by the student are appropriate for the project. If a student brings the incorrect materials or forgets them, they can purchase provided materials at the time of class.you can read all Policy, Terms & Conditions here

Starting something new can be super exciting when the world of possibility open ups. If you actually want to learn, retain the information and build a strong sewing practice the goal should be to take it one step at a time.
Jumping ahead to something more advanced than you are ready for often leaves students feeling defeated and burnt out.
Here is an order that will help you skill build:
1. Sewing 101 Classes or Privates Lessons. Some students take multiple classes at this level before moving on.Students who have taken classes & private lessons with me tend to be the most prepared. Even if you have sewn before or learned somewhere else I find my teaching style builds the strong foundation for all other classes.
Then you can start to follow your interest.
If you interested in Alterations:
2. Alterations - Hems
3. Alterations - T-shirt cropping
4. Alterations - Jeans
If you’re interest in garment construction:
2. Bow Boxer Shorts
3. Pj Pants
4. Float on Top
5. Button Up Shirt
6. Trousers
Also check you meet the prereq. That said, if you feel confident, you know yourself best! This note is simply here to make sure you're set up to enjoy every minute, not spend it catching up or unlearning old habits. If you're not sure if you meet the prerequisite for classes or what order is better for you - reach out I’d love to chat this over with you! -

What a sweet baby angel you are! As a self-funded teaching artist, community support is paramount to my success.
Here are a few things that would greatly impact my life and the work I'm building:
Subscribe to my newsletter (above)
Be my friend – tell me you see me and that I’m doing a good job (haha!)
Share virtually – post on social media or add a blurb to your own newsletter
Recommend my services to friends, or announce the news to your book club
Follow and engage with me on social media
Instagram
Substack
Come visit me!
And one very honest and humble option:
If you feel called to share funds, it would be deeply appreciated. Even just $5 (a few spools of thread!) goes a long way. Venmo

Let’s talk Prerecs, baby!
Sewing 101 - are machine sewing classes and no prior experience is required! It is perfect for first-timers, absolute beginners, or anyone in need of a hands-on refresher. People often think they should take a hand sewing class first. To me hand sewing and machine sewing are like riding a bike and driving a car. They both are modes of transportation with wheels, pedals, a seat and steering but learning to ride a bike doesn’t better prepare you for how to drive a car.
Advanced Sewing Classes
My requirement is for students to have recent sewing experience; I tend to consider this to be within the last 6months for most people. I find that when a student joins a class they aren't ready for - they struggle and don't retain the information. As you can imagine this also requires me to split my attention between teaching the class content and trying to squeeze in a review of the basics which affects everyone's experience.
I highly recommend if you aren’t sew to join a Sewing 101 class or book a private lesson to reacquaint yourself with the basics. This way, you can feel comfortable taking in the new information in future classes and can do things like thread the machine properly and troubleshoot issues on your own etc etc etc !

Honestly, sky in the limit. But we will take into consideration your vibes, style and budget to make the pieces you love at the back of your closet into something you will actually wear.

I work on a wide range of garments including wedding dresses, denim, outerwear, accessories and more. If you're unsure about a specific item, feel free to reach out!
-
Depending on the project, yes! I occasionally work on bags, home goods, or sentimental pieces - just ask!
-
In many cases, yes! If something has sentimental value, high quality, or just fits you well, repair or alteration can be a great investment.
-
Yes! I’m happy to provide creative direction based on your garment, style, and goals.
-
Reference images help guide the direction, details, and overall feel of your piece—but they’re not meant to be copied. As a designer, I create original pieces and do not replicate or copy other artists’ or designers’ work. Your final garment will be uniquely crafted based on your vision and the materials provided.

are curious about your own style
Down for a collaborative process
knowing you maybe shouldn’t be buying so much shit
too aware to be able to buy things from shein
caring for the things they already have

We can absolutely work together remotely. We’ll start with a Zoom consultation to go over your pieces and goals. From there, you’ll ship your items to me, and we’ll stay in touch throughout the process.
Once the work is complete, I’ll send everything back for you to try on. If any final adjustments are needed, we’ll refine them together until it’s just right.

I work out of my New York City studio Home Ec NYC located at :
44-02 23rd st #315
Long Island City NY 11101Please note studio in by appointment only. There are no walk ins allowed.
-
No, the studio is by appointment only.
-
Turnaround time varies depending on the complexity of the work and current order volume. Simple repairs may take a few days, while more involved alterations or upcycling projects can take longer.
-
Rush orders may be available for an additional fee. Please inquire ahead of time to check availability.
-
Pricing depends on the type of service and complexity of the work. You can view starting prices on this page, and I’ll confirm the final cost before beginning any work.
-
I prefer venmo but also accept cards.
The Retainer is due when you schedule you fitting or meeting. You are welcome to pay the full price up front or 50% down and 50% due on or before the pick up date. Clients who need further payment installments should reach out to discuss their needs.
-
Consultations are always free. They’re intended to answer questions about the process, help determine if this is the right fit for you, and give us a chance to get to know each other before moving forward.
Fittings for à la carte services are used to reserve your appointment time. Home Ec NYC is an appointment-only studio, and reserving fittings helps protect dedicated studio time and prevent last-minute cancellations or ghosting. You’d be surprised who would ghost a catch like me, but unfortunately there are some weirdos out there haha. The fitting fee can be applied toward the final cost of your work.
Design Meetings for custom work and upcycling projects reserve a dedicated 1.5–2 hour session. This time includes fittings, design development, project planning, sourcing materials, and pulling options specific to your project. The Design Meeting fee can also be applied toward the final cost of the project.
Wardrobe Redesign Packages reserve an extended appointment ranging from 4–8 hours. This includes all design time, fittings, wardrobe evaluation, sourcing, project planning, and collaborative development work completed during our session together. This fee is factored into the final package pricing, which is already offered at a discounted rate.

I have soooooo much to say about this haha but ill try to keep it short:
Alterations and skilled craftsmanship in general can feel “expensive” because we’ve been conditioned to see clothing as cheap and disposable. We’re also taught to undervalue physical labor and overlook the complexity of hands-on work.
In reality, low clothing prices often rely on fast production, lower-quality materials, and exploited labor (overwhelmingly of women).
Alterations, mending, and custom design are done by hand, with care, precision, and experience. Each piece is treated individually, not mass produced. Depending on the garment, the cost to alter or redesign it can match or exceed its original price.
You’re not just paying for the item you’re paying for the skill, time, and attention it takes to make it.
Working class artists, crafts and trades people deserve to make a living wage, to be compensated for their skills.
-
Nope!
-
Elements that add complexity can increase the cost, including:
Stretch and synthetic fabrics
Delicate or fragile materials
Intricate construction or multiple layers
Pattern matching (stripes, plaids, prints)
Working around embellishments (beading, lace, boning, etc.)
Limited seam allowance or previous alterations
Finishing Techniques
The overall volume of fabric or extent of the changes
These details require a more considered, hands-on approach often involving specialized techniques, additional fittings, and a higher level of precision to achieve the best result!
