Grainline: The Invisible Forces Controlling Your Life 🧵✨

Okay babe, we need to talk about grainline. I know, I know….it seems like something those with the highest of standards (me) just like to be super picky about (I do). Buttt this is really real and really important, and if not used properly, will humble you.

Grain is the direction your fabric was woven in. Depending on the direction your fabric is facing, it will have different properties. If you ignore it and cut your shit OFF GRAINNNNN, your garment will absolutely start acting possessed 👻! Twisting seams, warped hems, every piece starts fighting each other like an episode of The Bear.

When a pattern tells you to align that double-sided arrow with the straight grain, what it’s really saying is: “Do you want this to look good, or do you want to cry later?”

Pro move: DON'T TRUST THE CUT EDGE. The SELVAGE is your guiding light. Remember, the straight grain runs parallel to the selvage. If cutting on the fold, line it up perfectly, then smooth it out before pinning. If it’s rippling or skewing at the fold, your grain is off—readjust until it's flat, flat, flat and relaxed.

Now get to making! Line up you pattern with intention and cut as if I am looking over your shoulder 😜 . If your like “Whaddaya talkin' about?” I create a little diagram below!
