“Try experimenting with fucking around!”
Was the advice I gave about embroidery in class this week. “Yes, I’m not like a regular teacher… I’m a cool teacher.”
Sometimes the most valuable thing you can do as a maker is just give it a go and see what happens. When you approach your work with a sense of curiosity, you end up building intuition. Fucking around is a surefire way to release yourself from the final-product perfectionism trap.
Also, you’re allowed to make ugly things. I cannot stress this enough. Some projects exist purely to teach you. It’s not wasted time, that’s rrrrresearch, baby. 📚
Homework: Set aside a low-stakes “chaos experiment project.” Scrap fabric, mismatched thread, zero expectations. Try the technique you’re scared of. Test the idea you’re not sure will work. No one needs to see it unless you want them to, but I’d love to 😉 This is your lab. 🧪
And it wouldn’t be me without saying, of course you should measure, press, and respect the tools and craft. But also, give yourself permission to ffffffuck around a little, that’s where the magic lives. ✨
Now go forth, make something questionable, and learn something brilliant along the way.
