Learn the foundations of patternmaking for fashion design by drafting your own custom sloper!!

This course covers the basic blocks and essential patternmaking techniques used in fashion design. You’ll create a bodice sloper tailored to your measurements—a foundational tool that can be used to develop endless design variations. Perfect for those with some sewing experience or familiarity with commercial patterns—no prior patternmaking experience needed!

This one-day intensive workshop will be broken up into two sessions:

🌱 Morning session: Learn how to take proper body measurements for pattern drafting, and then draft a basic bodice front to your measurements.

🌳 Afternoon session: Learn the three core pattern manipulation techniques using mini patterns. You’ll explore how to modify darts, style lines, and shapes through slash-and-spread, rotation, and pivot methods to bring your design ideas to life!

We will cover things like:

🌊 Draping demo to help connect the 2D and the 3D
📏 Learn how to take proper measurements for pattern drafting
✏️ Draft the basic bodice front to your measurements
🦋 3 core pattern manipulation techniques - style lines, darts, and slash and spread
🪐 Customize your basic patterns and bring your design ideas to life

Prerequisite:

🤸‍♀️ For those with prior sewing experience (so you have a basic understanding of what patterns are) but 🐣 no need for any patternmaking experience. Probably will be good to have sewn something from a commercial pattern at least once

👉Note: This class is for people 16+. If you're interested in classes for kids ,reach out!

What do you need to bring?

📓It’s a good idea to bring a notebook or sketchbook to tape in mini patterns, sketch, and take notes!

It is strongly advised to arrive early. We will need to start promptly and use every minute of our time together to ensure smooth instruction and completion of the project. The group will move through all instructions and steps at the same time. This is not a drop-in style class.

If a student arrives more than 5 minutes late, it is at the discretion of the instructor whether they can join. If a student arrives 10 minutes late, they forfeit their registration fee and space in the class.

MATERIALS
It is up to the instructor's discretion if the materials brought by the student are appropriate for the project. If a student brings the incorrect materials or forgets them, they can purchase provided materials at the time of class.

LIABILITY
I understand that by participating in this class or workshop, I will be in an environment where various equipment, including but not limited to sewing machines, steam irons, sharp tools like scissors and pins, and other crafting instruments, will be used by myself and others. The use of such tools carries an inherent risk of injury.

By attending this class or workshop, I voluntarily accept all associated risks. I confirm that I am physically capable of using the necessary equipment without the need for constant supervision. I acknowledge that this Accident Waiver and Release of Liability form will be utilized by Hillary O'Dell, Hilandel LLC and its affiliates for any class, workshop, or event in which I participate, and it will govern my conduct and responsibilities throughout the event.

Emma Rubinson

is a couture fashion designer and educator based in NYC. Her work is an exploration of the human experience, blending dreamscapes, alternate realities, and psychological phenomena to empower people to reveal and embrace the true colors of their inner souls.

Beyond her own artistic explorations, Emma is dedicated to education and community. Through her classes in patternmaking, portfolio development, and social craft-based events, she inspires budding designers and creatives to discover their unique artistic voices.
